PatriciaPATRICIA BARTELL Born in La Paz Bolivia, South America, Patricia is a graduate of Whitworth University with a B.A. in Music Education and Accordion Performance.  The first from Whitworth to graduate with an accordion performance degree.   Patricia did her student teaching under the guidance of Karen Baldwin at Chatteroy Elementary School and Riverside Elementary school. She finished her student teaching at Ferris High School before she landed her job with Northwest Christian Elementary School.  She taught there for two years before moving into full-time position teaching private piano and accordion lessons in her studio, “Able To Play.”  She is widely-known throughout the U.S. northwest and western Canada as an adjudicator, professional performer and teacher.

 

Patricia is a certified Simply Music Piano and Accordion teacher.  She has studied piano with Dr. Judith Schoepflin of Whitworth College and with Kendall Feeney of the Golandsky Institute, which is the preeminent center for the Taubman Technique Approach. Patricia has also studied "The New Technical Approach" with the world-renowned accordion teacher Frederic Deschamps in France.  This technique approach has helped produce amazing results for all ages.

Currently Patricia is a member of Tango Vocaldo (Argentine Tango Quartet), leads a radical young accordion band called, “The Portatos,” was the 2012 organizer for the Trophée Mondial (World Championships for Accordion) that came to the U.S.A. for the first time.  Patricia is a Hohner Endorsee, and the Simply Music Hohner Director with HOHNER.  She is a certified teacher of Simply Music and is working with the Founder and C.E.O. of Simply Music to complete the new Hohner Certified Accordion Method.

Patricia is a professional musician whose performances continue to receive high reviews; individual, ensemble and with numerous other classical artists both in the western states and Canada. As a person who has performed in numerous international competitions, Patricia has claimed many championships, including the prestigious Kimberley International Championship award, the Leavenworth International Championship, 3rd in the Maddalena Belfoire (virtuoso entertainment world competition for females) and recently 3rd in Castelfidardo Italy (one of the most prestigious competitions for Accordion).

Patricia has been an adjudicator for competitions and festivals such as the American Accordion Association (AAA), Accordion Teachers & Guild (ATG), Calgary Canadian Accordion Association and others. She also travels world-wide as the USA judge for the international championship Trophée Mondial of the C.M.A (World Confederation for the Accordion - World Trophy for Accordion)

Favorite color? Any of the royal colors but especially purple.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be? New Zealand. It’s incredibly beautiful.

Favorite style of music to play? Argentinian Tangos – perhaps it’s the South American in me?

Favorite coffee drink type? Iced Mocha Frappuccino (16oz. with whipping cream)

or a Mocha Latte.

Share the oldest memory you have with your favorite musical instrument. I have two favorite instruments. For the piano: learning my first three notes on the piano CDE is my oldest memory. We had an old upright piano and there were a lot of us kids so we each took turns practicing. For the accordion, my oldest memory is playing on a 12 bass accordion and playing the song Dorothy Polka.

If you could choose any super hero capability what would it be and why? It would be flying, so I could bypass all the airport securities, never loose my luggage and not have to wait hours for flight connections.

If you could be any age for a week what age would that be? 28. It has always been my favorite number (I don’t really know why) and no matter how old I get, I am always 28. J

If someone were to bribe you what would they have to do or bring you? I can’t really be bribed, but if they insist on bringing me something, bring me chocolate of some sort. (Snickers, Turtles, Rolos, Twix, etc.)

What is your favorite fast food restaurant? Subway - (Italian BMT sandwich – no olives, pepperoncino or jalapeños.) Although I have to agree with Johanna: Panda Express is pretty amazing!

If you could be any animal in the world for 24 hours what would you be? A horse – they are so majestic, strong and smart.

Picture this: You wake up to find that the world has forgotten your favorite composer. Who did they forget? What would the world do without Beethoven! He had everything: purpose, precision and passion.

If you could delete one vegetable from existence what vegetable would you choose? If mushrooms were a vegetable (which they aren’t) I would delete them from existence. Even my dogs don’t like mushrooms so surely that should account for something. But as for a real vegetable – it would have to be brussel sprouts.

You got offered a chance to own a log cabin in the woods, a penthouse in Seattle, a home on the beachfront, or an apartment in Paris. Which one would you choose? A log cabin in the woods. It would have to be a big log cabin so all my friends could come and enjoy.

What past historical figure would be your best friend if he or she where still alive? Moses

What’s your favorite season? It has always been the fall season. I love watching the beauty of the trees turning color. Hearing the leaves crunch under my feet with the crisp air nipping at my nose while wearing a fleece sweater. Also love those fall evenings where I sit on the deck by the fire pit wrapped up in a fleece blanket with a nice cup of hot chocolate and Isabella sleeping in my lap – what bliss!

What is your favorite coffee drink type? Drip coffee with cream, no sugar and a big straw. Not to be confused with an Americano.

Share the oldest memory you have with your favorite musical instrument.  Being frustrated trying to learn to read, play and count rhythm all at the same time.

If you could choose any super hero capability what would it be and why? Contentment in all things.

If you could be any age for a week what age would that be? Eight years old. I’d have no responsibilities and can go out and play in the mud.

If someone were to bribe you what would they have to do or bring you? Their grandpa’s film cameras.

What is your favorite fast food restaurant? Sushi Maru

What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is blue.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be? If I could travel anywhere in the world I would go everywhere! I couldn’t pick just one place, however first I would probably visit Ireland.

What is your favorite style of music to play? My favorite style of music to play is anything with energy! My favorite types of pieces to play though are ones from movie soundtracks that I have heard before.

What is your favorite coffee drink type? My favorite coffee drink type would be a blended caramel Frappuccino with whipped cream.

Share the oldest memory you have with your favorite musical instrument. My favorite instrument would have to be the piano and my oldest memory with it took place when I was only four or five years old. My family was visiting my great grandparents and I remember seeing this old upright piano in the corner and desperately wanted to play it. Having wonderful grandparents that I do they opened up the piano and let me bang on the keys. I remember being so frustrated while playing because I couldn’t make any “pretty” sounds. Later when I started piano lessons at age eight my great grandfather gave me that same piano and I steadily learned to make “pretty” and sometimes not so pretty sounds.

If you could choose any super hero capability what would it be and why? If I could chose a superhero capability then I would choose the ability to fly. One, because it would make my superhero cape look awesome! And two, because then I could get to work literally in a minute.

If you could be any age for a week what age would that be? If I could be any age for a week then I would be five. Because five year olds still get to take naps every day and typically don’t do school yet.

If someone were to bribe you what would they have to do or bring you? I accept all candy and coffee treats as bribes!

What is your favorite fast food restaurant? My favorite fast food restaurant is definitely Panda Express. I don’t know how, but that place always hits a sweet spot.

If you could be any animal in the world for 24 hours what would you be? I would love to be a bird for 24 hours. To be able to go and see the world from the eyes of a bird would be a phenomenon.

Picture this: You wake up to find that the world has forgotten your favorite composer. Who did they forget? That would be a sad day if the world forgot John Williams.

If you could delete one vegetable from existence what vegetable would you choose? Brussel sprouts!

You got offered a chance to own a log cabin in the woods, a penthouse in Seattle, a home on the beachfront, or an apartment in Paris. Which one would you choose? I would choose a cabin in the woods.

What past historical figure would be your best friend if he or she where still alive? Cleopatra and I would be best buddies.

What’s your favorite season? My favorite season is summer! Filled with sun, water, and barbecues!

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?Anywhere my baby and husband are ... but Machu Picchu would be pretty awesome. After that, Scotland, Ireland and New Zealand. 

What is your favorite style of music to play?Soundtracks, tango ... anything that moves me. I don't necessarily have a favorite style. 

What is your favorite coffee drink type?For regular everyday drinking, I like drip coffee with cream. We get a really lovely blend rom Trader Joe's and make it in our French Press. For special occasions, I really like Dutch Bros. Cocomo or The London Latte from Wake Up Call. 

Share the oldest memory you have with your favorite musical instrument.My first memory connected with my accordion is being in the car at 10 or 11 years old with my Dad. We were going out to some place in Idaho to buy my first accordion. I kept asking Dad what an accordion was!

If you could choose any super hero capability what would it be and why?I would choose Super Human Organizing Capabilities. That's a thing, right?

If you could be any age for a week what age would that be?The age I am. It's perfect. 🙂

If someone were to bribe you what would they have to do or bring you?Bribes are wrong, so I can't answer that. 

What is your favorite fast food restaurant?Home. Fast food is icky.

If you could be any animal in the world for 24 hours what would you be? Probably an otter because they are cute, friendly, resourceful, family-oriented and they hold hands when they sleep. 

Picture this: You wake up to find that the world has forgotten your favorite composer. Who did they forget?Steven Curtis Chapman, John Williams and Hans Zimmer.

If you could delete one vegetable from existence what vegetable would you choose? Pickled fish ... because I can't think of a vegetable I hate. 

You got offered a chance to own a log cabin in the woods, a penthouse in Seattle, a home on the beachfront, or an apartment in Paris. Which one would you choose?I've lived in the log house ... so I'll pick the home on the beachfront. Specifically on the ocean.

What past historical figure would be your best friend if he or she where still alive?Queen Esther, Harriet Tubman and Corrie Ten Boom. They were all women of courage and faith whom I admire.

What’s your favorite season?My favorite season is spring because it brings new life after the cold of winter.

What is your favorite color? I have many favorite colors! Top four are blue, green, purple, and pink. But if I HAD to choose one out of those four, I’d pick blue because that is the color you will see most in my wardrobe!

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be? I would LOVE to travel anywhere in Scandinavia. I think the scenery there is magnificent and I would love to experience its beauty in person.

What is your favorite style of music to play? I like to play modern instrumental and some classical music.

What is your favorite coffee drink type? I almost ALWAYS get a sugar-free white-chocolate mocha with cream AND whipped cream from Dutch Bros.

Share the oldest memory you have with your favorite musical instrument. When I was really little, before I had any desire to learn how to play the piano, I would play around on my grandparent’s upright piano in their sitting room. My aunt knew how to play and I enjoyed watching her. It wasn’t until several years later that I got my first piano and began lessons.

If you could choose any super hero capability what would it be and why? I would love to be able to read other people’s minds because if I knew what someone was thinking, I could better judge my actions and attitude towards them.

If you could be any age for a week what age would that be? I would want to be four to five years old again because I have so many memories from that age and I’d like to go back to that time.

If someone were to bribe you what would they have to do or bring you? Well, first off, they would have to bring me the coffee drink listed above. Then, as a bonus bribe, a chocolate bar would be fantastic!

What is your favorite fast food restaurant? I enjoy Subway and Jack in the Box. (Jack in the Box has the best Dr. Pepper).

If you could be any animal in the world for 24 hours what would you be? I would love to be a butterfly because then I could stretch out my beautiful wings and fly wherever I wanted.

Picture this: You wake up to find that the world has forgotten your favorite composer. Who did they forget? Currently, my favorite composer is Beethoven.

If you could delete one vegetable from existence what vegetable would you choose?   Does cilantro count? I HATE cilantro! Yuck!

You got offered a chance to own a log cabin in the woods, a penthouse in Seattle, a home on the beachfront, or an apartment in Paris. Which one would you choose? I would choose the log cabin the woods. Cabins are just so cozy and relaxing!

What past historical figure would be your best friend if he or she where still alive? I believe Mother Teresa would be my best friend if she was alive and I knew her.

What’s your favorite season? Autumn is my favorite because I enjoy the cooler weather after the intense summer heat. And…my birthday is in the Fall.
